Things To Do
Auchterhouse has a number of local points of interest which are great for outdoor activities such as walking & hiking, sports and shopping.
Walking & Hiking
Auchterhouse Hill
At 426 meters, our hill is the second highest in the Sidlaw Range. It’s a beautiful walk through paths surrounded by heather in all seasons of the year with rewarding views at the top towards Dundee, North Sea, Perthshire and Angus Glens. The grassy remnants of ramparts that protected an iron age hillfort can still be seen around the summit. Its an adventure everyone should experience.
Kinpurney Tower
Sitting atop Kinpurney Hill the tower can be seen for miles around. You can start your walk from the Newtyle of Auchterhouse side of the hill and venture up to see the tower up close. Built by amateur astronomer James Stuart-Mackenzie in 1766, its 6 meters tall and still in good condition to this day. Take a picnic and enjoy the views from the top.
Balkello Community Woodland
To the East of Auchterhouse lies Balkello Community Woodland. There is a large car park that leads you to the start of lot’s of walking options for differing abilities. Visit the open grassy area overlooking small ponds and a spring, wander one of the three signposted trails (Sidlaws View. Woodland Wander & Raven) or if you fancy along outing then Balkello is a gateway to hiking the Sidlaws and on to Glamis.
Dronley Community Woodland
Situated just South of Auchterhouse heading towards Eastfield Farm Steddings and Dronley, this wood is laced with a network of paths which lead from the public car park at the NW corner of the wood.
